PolyglotApp: How it works

CONNECT THROUGH COMMUNITIES, ACROSS LANGUAGES

A shared interest can bring people together even when they do not share a language. PolyglotApp gives them a place to connect, exchange experiences, and take part in ongoing discussions.

Create or join a community around a subject, experience, or goal that matters to you. Write in your preferred language and read other participants’ contributions in yours, with automatic translation helping you follow the conversation.

A community can connect people within one neighbourhood or across countries. The benefit is the opportunity to ask questions, learn from different perspectives, and build relationships with people whom language differences might otherwise make difficult to reach.

WHAT COULD YOU USE IT FOR?

Collaborate across universities and research institutions

Researchers, educators, and adult students could discuss a shared scientific question, compare observations, and explore published findings. A community studying mountain water systems, for example, could connect people researching glaciers, rainfall, and water availability in different regions.

Participants could find one another through colleagues or existing networks and continue discussions in their preferred languages.

Learn from climate impacts in other places

Residents of flood-affected communities in Nepal and elsewhere could exchange recovery experiences with people facing similar challenges. People experiencing heatwaves in Europe and other regions could discuss conditions in their neighbourhoods and what they have learned about adapting to extreme heat.

Researchers, local organizations, and municipal staff could contribute alongside residents. These would be conversations for learning and sharing experience; urgent assistance should come from the appropriate emergency services.

Connect within a multilingual neighbourhood

Neighbours may share concerns without sharing a language. A local community could discuss events, public spaces, transport, community gardens, or proposed improvements. Newcomers could ask questions, while established residents share their knowledge.

Other communities could bring together businesses seeking connections across markets, educators exchanging teaching practices, or enthusiasts comparing experiences of a shared interest. The starting question is: who could benefit from discussing this together across languages?

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE, AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Anyone aged 18 or older who registers with PolyglotApp can create or join a community, subject to its Terms of Use and Community Guidelines. You do not need an institutional affiliation or professional expertise. Questions, practical experience, and a willingness to learn are welcome contributions.

The person who creates a community becomes its owner, starts conversations, and moderates participation. Members contribute by replying. Owners can provide a conversation where members suggest future topics.

Automatic translation can sometimes misinterpret wording, particularly specialist terms. Write clearly and ask for clarification when something seems uncertain. Treat other participants respectfully and avoid sharing sensitive personal information.

START WITH PEOPLE AND A SHARED PURPOSE

You can begin by joining an existing community that interests you. If you want to create one, first identify a few people who might find it useful. Discuss the idea with them and agree on a question they would like to explore.

Creating a community does not automatically bring an audience. A small group willing to contribute is a useful beginning; it need not be large or international from the outset.

Once people express interest, choose a clear name, explain the purpose, and prepare a few opening conversations. Invite those first participants and develop the discussion together.

WHY I CREATED POLYGLOTAPP

My name is Norbert D’Costa. I live in Brampton, Ontario, and created PolyglotApp.

We live in a deeply divided world. Having lived in India, the Middle East, and Canada, I believe that opportunities to speak with and understand one another can help bring us closer together. I created PolyglotApp to make those connections possible across languages.
